Unwinding With The Windows Down

As far back as I can remember, I liked car rides. It was probably because not far into my childhood my grandparents no longer drove, so a ride was a treat. Fortunately, my next door neighbor, Betty Ripke, drove and often invited me to go along on trips to Iron Mountain, or off into the woods somewhere to drop off her brother to go hunting.

Of course, now, I drive myself though unfortunately most of my driving is to and from work. Most of my long trips are to the U.P., which even though I have driven the trip so many times it often is boring, can also be very enjoyable.

Yesterday was such an occasion. Just me in the car, with the music playing, windows down, and sun roof open. Not a cloud in the sky. Warm, but not too hot. Perfect. Barreling north on I-75 at 70 MPH as to not be run over, then hit the Mackinac Bridge, turn left on to U.S., and start the process of winding down at 55 MPH.

This evening, as I was sitting along the shore of Lake Michigan watching the sun set and listening to the waves rolling, I realized the irony of the situation. While I didn’t look forward to my trip to visit mom, it came at just the time when I have been feeling stressed. This came to me as I realized, sitting there, with the waves rolling in, that the aches and pains that become all too common were not at that moment with me. It is then that I realized how blessed I was to have the U.P. to go to. If I lived here, I am not so sure I would appreciate this place.
