1984 Cubs were 48-36 at the All Star break, the 2015 Cubs could be 47-40. In mid June 1984 the Cubs traded for Rick Sutcliffe, who went on to win the Cy Young that year and really was the piece needed for them to make the playoffs.
Of course, in 1984 nobody was ahead of the Cubs, this year the Cardinals and Pirates are ahead.
I think if the 2015 Cubs really want to make the playoffs this year, they need another quality starting pitcher. In other words, they need an equivalent to Rick Sutcliffe. They might back in to the last wild card spot, but I think with their youth they are more likely to fade in August.
