Where’s the beef?

Last Christmas I bought the Asus Eee PC, the first of what are now called netbooks. I have been happy with this purchase, and the device has served me well, but since the first Eee came out there has been a bunch of announcements of “me-too” netbooks that I have been watching closely.

While I like my Eee PC, there are a few things that I wish were better. For one, I wish it had built-in Bluetooth so that I didn’t have to fish out my USB Bluetooth adapter whenever I want to use the Eee PC with my cell phone. While I understand that the netbooks are targetted at a low-end consumer market, I am surprised that there aren’t many higher end netbooks including Bluetooth. HP includes Bluetooth for with their MiniNotes, but I find the MiniNote’s $700 and higher prices ridiculous; for that price I would just buy another notebook.

My other wish is that the Eee PC had a larger screen. I know there are some hacked drivers that will pump up the screen resolution, but I haven’t spent time playing around with them. All the new netbooks come 8.9 inch or larger screen (my Eee has a seven inch screen) but none of them have built-in Bluetooth, and the screen alone is not worth spending more money for a new netbook.
